KEVIN HIGGINS  // bass guitar

Kevin took up bass guitar aged 14 and within two years was playing blues in Dublin pubs. He earned his BA in Jazz Performance from Newpark Music Centre in three years, during which he gigged extensively with jam-rock trio Mescalito.

Upon graduating with first class honours, Kevin formed Vein Melter, a groove-jazz originals project. He backed musicians such as Ben Prevo, Phil Ware, Edel Meade and Mike Nielsen, and was a founding member of Irish pop-funk act Zaska. In 2011 he played Electric Picnic with Hozier. He also put together a quartet, Nature, to gig and record a full set of originals on the album “Forget The Theory”.

2012 saw Kevin study at the International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music in the Banff Centre, Canada. Here he was deeply influenced by teachers Steve Lehman, Vijay Iyer, Okkyung Lee and Miles Okazaki. Most recently, Kevin has completed a Master of Music in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In that city he performed in the renowned Bimhuis venue and recorded an album with free improv/noise trio, Glitchpuke. Kevin’s musical interests centre on a holistic view of African-American performance style and its signature aspects: syncopated rhythm, blues pitching, hipness and interactivity. He is also fascinated by how music intermeshes with everyday life.
